INGRAHAM INSTITUTE

Ghaziabad

Our History

The Genesis of the Ingraham Institute (1926) :
The history of the Ingraham Institute has its roots deep in Indian history and in the heart of Ghaziabad, where a remarkable tale of perseverance and excellence unfolded. 1926 marked the genesis of a legacy, when the Methodist Church envisioned a beacon of hope for the agrarian community, a place where young minds could flourish, and the marginalized could find solace.
The Institute’s legacy began with a vision to uplift the agrarian community. The campus grew staple crops—wheat, rice, pulses, maize, sugarcane, and potatoes—besides seasonal vegetables. The dairy and poultry farm made the campus a self-sufficient unit, and peasants and farmers from nearby fields would come to learn about fertilizers and farming techniques. A small dispensary under the able guidance of Dr. Mrs M. Tewari provided health tips and primary health benefits.

This vision, originally conceived in 1919 by American missionary Dr. F. M. North, materialized in 1926 with the establishment of the Ingraham Institute on a 65-acre campus part of Jatwara Kalan Village of Tehsil Ghaziabad in the Meerut District of the United Provinces. On this newly acquired land, a Teacher’s Training School and a small dispensary were established, marking the humble yet determined beginnings of an institution devoted to learning and service.

Early Leadership and Milestones :
At the helm of this new endeavour was Mr. G.C. Pace, the Institute’s first Principal and Director, who served from 1926 to 1950. Through his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment, Mr. Pace laid a strong foundation for what would soon grow into a multifaceted centre of education. In 1949, under the leadership of Rev. J.W. Finny, the Institute expanded its scope with the establishment of a Technical Department, reflecting its growing commitment to vocational and practical education.

After Mr. Pace’s retirement, Dr. J.N. Hollister succeeded him as Director in 1950, followed in 1953 by Mr. Hank (H.A.) Lacy. In the fall of 1958, Mr. Douglous Pickett took over, and recognizing the increasing educational needs of the community, he established the Institute’s first High School in 1963, which was later affiliated with the U.P. Board.
